I have very fond memories of trips to England for summer holidays when I was a child. We used to get the ferry from Rosslare to Fishguard. Once off the ferry there was always a long drive to our campsite. I’m sure my parents’ patience was tested many times by one of my brothers or I asking them ‘are we there yet?’
Remembering the excitement of finally arriving at our destination brings a smile to my face. We were finally here after a long journey. What now we wondered? We quickly moved our focus on to wanting to explore our campsite.
This is a simple example of waiting and wishing to be where we aren’t and then once getting to where we want, we quickly long for the next desire. Nowadays we are getting so accustomed to instant gratification. A click of a button and we can get what we desire instantly. Although wonderful in many ways, unfortunately, there are also expected downsides to this.
We have lost the art of waiting on the natural cycles of life. Whether it’s a health goal or a career goal, we can easily get disheartened if we don’t see quick results. Many marketing campaigns tell us what we want to believe; eat this and do these exercises to achieve X. If we struggle to follow these instructions, then it’s easy to blame ourselves and think we just didn’t do it well enough.
We want quick results, so we’re sold ‘quick fixes’. What’s not mentioned is the many factors that affect our health and weight. From our environment in our mother’s womb to the air we breath there are endless reasons we are how we are.
In my personal experience, and as a health practitioner I have learned that there are many paradoxes in life. One is the challenge to accept where we are right now, but also have the desire to be better and move towards our goals. Like the natural cycles and rhythms of nature, our life has cycles of movements forward and times of integration. These times of integration can easily be judged as slow progress or even going backwards.
I have found the more I am in tune with my body and nature, the easier it is to know what cycle I am in and recognise if it is time to push forward or to be more receptive and relaxed.
The number of distractions we have in life, including smart marketing pulling us towards this, that and the other, can mean this is very challenging.
It’s time we choose peace over ‘things’.
When clients come to me looking for help to achieve their health goals, I always remind myself that this amazing human being in front of me has everything they need within them to be their best self.
I’m here to be an educator, guide, and supporter. I am a mirror for people to see and realise the best steps to take next. Slow and steady is my motto.
Remember YOU are the authority on your health. Explore and educate yourself on the many choices you have. Tune into your body and your natural cycles, and your inner compass will let you know which is best for you right now.
I love this following quote from Abraham Hicks which reminds us that we will always want more so we may as well enjoy the process:
“You’re always, always, always going to be on your way to something more – always. And when you relax and accept that, and stop beating up on yourself for not being someplace that you’re not, and instead, start embracing where you are while you keep your eye on where you’re going – now life becomes really, really, really fun.”
